We live in a society that idolizes entertainment- athletes, musicians, and actors. Yet none of the scientific and technological advancements that have bettered our standard of living have been due to entertainers. They have been due to the hard work of scientists and engineers around the globe who are finding innovative solutions to the world’s problems. As the world becomes more complex and the old ways of doing things become inefficient, more and more scientists and engineers will be needed to solve the difficult problems of tomorrow. Currently, not enough young people are pursuing careers in science and technology to meet future needs, and we need your help to change that.
To combat this problem, Dean Kamen, inventor and engineer, founded the organization known as FIRST- For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. FIRST holds annual regional and international robotics competitions for youth around the world. These competitions celebrate the creative and innovative use of STEM- science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, to solve complex problems, and mimic a real world workplace setting. The challenges teams are faced with include a small budget, short time frame, and cross departmental collaboration. Mentored by professional engineers from the community, teachers, and other volunteers with expertise to help, students learn that careers in science and technology can be fun, exciting, and rewarding, while also developing vital skills to succeed in the workplace.
